About

The Fairtrade group in Portsmouth aims to persuade local companies and organisations to switch to Fairtrade products. We succeeded in making Portsmouth a Fairtrade City in 2004 and our Fairtrade City status was renewed in 2023. Since then we had a new motion of support from Portsmouth City Council, following our celebrations of 20 years as a Fairtrade Ciry and we have received a Civic Award from the Lord Mayor for our work.

We have shared pictures from our campaigning in 2024 . Find out more here

Last year we organised a series of tea-tastings, with help from Penny Chinery who also organies other Fairtrade events locally. Find out more here

Portsmouth City Council is encouraging local businesses to take part in a new Fairtrade initiative celebrating the city’s centenary year. As part of Portsmouth100, the Portsmouth Fairtrade Forum aims to highlight 100 local businesses that actively support Fairtrade by selling or serving at least two Fairtrade items..

The Portsmouth100 campaign offers a simple way for cafés, restaurants, retailers and service providers of all sizes to show their commitment to Fairtrade, whether they already offer Fairtrade tea, coffee, sugar, chocolate, clothing or crafts, or are looking to introduce new Fairtrade-certified options.

Participating businesses will receive a Portsmouth100 Fairtrade certificate and a window sticker to display throughout the Centenary year, showcasing their support to customers, visitors and the wider community.

We still work hard to show people that buying products with the Fairtrade Mark can make a real difference to some of the poorest people in the world. There are over 5,000 products with the Fairtrade Mark now and buying them means that communities have extra money for schools, healthcare and coping with the changing climate.

Getting accredited.

Portsmouth is proud to hold Fairtrade Community Accreditation. But did you know other organisations can also become accredited, including places of worship, schools, universities and colleges. If you want to find out more about how the organisation you are part of can achieve Fairtrade accreditation contact jane.singh@ portsmouthcc.gov.uk.

Please think about applying for or renewing your Fairtrade status https://www.fairtrade.org.uk/get-involved/get-involved-in-your-community/places-worship/.
